High ground in East Texas bears silent testimony to a people long gone: the platform mounds of the Caddo civilization, rising around 800 CE along ancient trade routes that Spanish colonists later named the El Camino Real de los Tejas. Centuries after these earthen temples fell silent, Buffalo Soldiers, African American cavalry and infantry, traveled through parts of East Texas during their deployments. They followed corridors such as the Old San Antonio Road, which overlaps Caddo-era paths. Although no unit set up camp within the mounds’ shadows, the echo of their horseback passage connects two very different histories of endurance, migration, and place-making across the Pineywoods.
