Founded in 2001, the Center for African American Military History also known as Buffalo Soldiers National Museum (BSNM) is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and sharing the history of African Americans in the United States military from the Revolutionary War to the present. Through exhibitions, educational programming, and the performing and visual arts, the museum honors the service, sacrifice, and enduring contributions of Black men and women whose military experiences helped shape the nation. BSNM goes beyond traditional military history to center the full human experience of service. The museum highlights not only those who wore the uniform, but also the families, communities, and cultural networks that sustained them before, during, and long after their service. By exploring daily life, resilience, leadership, and legacy, BSNM connects military history to broader struggles for freedom, citizenship, and justice.

As the museum moves forward, BSNM is committed to more inclusive and expansive storytelling. This includes engaging the Indigenous experience, uplifting the often-overlooked AfroLatino experience within Black military service, and centering the critical roles of women. Through collaboration with scholars, veterans, artists, and local communities, BSNM continues to evolve as a space for honest history, reflection, and dialogue. BSNM seeks to deepen public understanding, foster pride, and inspire a shared sense of responsibility for the histories that unite us together.
