Sitting in the heart of historic Galveston Island, the Bryan Museum traces the development of the American West across 2,500 years of civilization. Its vast collection of 70,000 objects had been the personal property of West Texas resident J.P. Bryan until he founded the museum in 2015.
Bryan is the great-great-great grandson of Moses Austin, father of Stephen F. Austin and the man who initiated the Anglo colonization of Mexican Tejas in the 1820s. In the Galveston area, much of the colonization came through the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company, which was formed for the purpose of colonizing lands previously assigned to empresarios Joseph Vehlein, David G. Burnet, and Lorenzo de Zavala.
