The "Big Spring" was once a life-saving oasis on the West Texas plains, and Buffalo Soldiers, especially the 10th Cavalry, were well aware of its importance during their post-Civil War campaigns. They crisscrossed this dry country, guarding trails like the Marcy Road, scouting for Comanche and Kiowa groups, and controlling vital water sources like this one. When you take in the views from the bluff at Big Spring State Park, imagine the troopers who relied on the Big Spring and fought to secure the area. Also check out the historic facilities built by Civilian Conservation Corps and the over 300 rock carvings at Scenic Mountain that tell the story of Big Spring over time.
