Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park
Tropical Trail Region
The Lower Rio Grande Valley buzzed with Buffalo Soldiers from the 9th Cavalry and 24th Infantry after the Civil War well into the early 1900s. Stationed at posts like Fort Brown and Fort Ringgold, they patrolled the river, protected communities from raids and bandits, and kept things stable along this lively international border. When you visit, picture these soldiers adapting to the unique South Texas environment as they worked to keep the peace. Bentsen is a birder’s paradise, with around 360 species of birds reported in the park, along with butterflies, javelinas, bobcats, and more!
