On the Colorado River at the site of present-day Columbus, Benjamin Beason operated a ferry. It was at this crossing that Sam Houston and his army of volunteers camped for one week in March 1836. Houston had evacuated (and burned) the town of Gonzales, retreating to San Felipe to recruit and train reinforcements in the face of General Santa Anna’s large, advancing forces. It was here that Houston awaited the arrival of James Fannin and his 400+ men. Instead he learned of their capture at Goliad. That capture would turn into catastrophe as Fannin and his men were brutally executed under the orders of Santa Anna.
