Barrington Living History Farm State Historic Site
Nestled on the Brazos River at Washington-on-the-Brazos, Barrington Living History Farm once thrummed with the ambitions of Anson Jones, the last president of the Republic of Texas. Here, cotton fields, period kitchens, and farm animals bring mid-19th-century life to vivid relief. In the decades following the Civil War, African American soldiers known as Buffalo Soldiers traveled across Texas. Although none were stationed at Barrington itself, their presence in nearby regions reflects a seismic shift from antebellum enslavement to federal force and postwar freedom. Their journeys and resilience echo across the same lands where Jones farmed and governed, tying the site to both the old republic and a new national era.
