Balmorhea State Park
The desert oasis of San Solomon Springs, now home to Balmorhea State Park, was a crucial stop for troopers from the 9th and 10th Cavalry who patrolled the arid Trans-Pecos region after the Civil War. The soldiers guarded the busy San Antonio-El Paso Road and escorted mail coaches. Sometimes they skirmished with Apache groups who also valued these springs. As you swim in the park’s artesian spring pool, ponder the stories of endurance and survival of the many people who relied on this water over time. Explore the natural wonders of the pool and surrounding cienegas, and admire the historic structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
