William B. Travis’s slave Joe fought and was captured in the Battle of the Alamo. He was freed by General Santa Anna to take back a story of humiliating defeat to the Texas cabinet. His account of the battle, however, had the opposite effect and served to galvanize the Texas revolutionaries into action.

Today, the Alamo is one of the most popular visitor attractions in Texas. Millions of people come to learn about the Alamo defenders, including Joe, who lost their lives in this famous battle. A shrine to Texan identity, the Alamo’s unmistakable shape evokes values of grit, determination, and sacrifice for all Texans.
