After a hotly contested election in 1901, Stratford replaced Coldwater as the county seat. It grew into a two-railroad town and shipping center for cattle and cotton. The 1922 red brick Sherman County Courthouse graces the town square, serving as an active government building and heart of the Stratford community.
Nearby, housed in the 1931 Santa Fe depot, the Sherman County Depot Museum preserves the county’s farm and ranch history. Graphic photos depict sun-blocking sandstorms of the 1930s Dust Bowl. A unique display shows memorabilia from rancher Wendell Flores, including his 1920s polo equipment. Panhandle ranch hands sometimes formed polo teams and competed against neighboring ranches.
