The history of Seymour dates back to prehistoric times. Fossils that were collected in the 1800's and sent to Harvard were stored away until in 1939 when the box of bones were found and examined. The discovery of the fossilized bones lead to a new animal that is the "missing link" between amphibians and reptiles. Since the specimen was found in Seymour it was given the name of Seymouria and it lived about 280 million years ago.

Seymour is located in the Red River Valley and the Great Western Trail passed through the area.
