The community of Prairie View is home to Prairie View A&M University. Established as the Alta Vista Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youth when the Alta Vista Plantation was deeded to the state in 1876, it was later renamed Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical University. This was the only publicly funded historically African American college in Texas for years. The campus has several historic buildings designed by renowned African American architects who studied and later taught at the university.
