COMPANY TOWN

When the Dow Chemical Company established a presence in southeast Texas, company executives wanted to accommodate their thousands of employees with desirable living conditions. The best plan, Dow directors determined, was to build the city of Lake Jackson, a completely new town, on the former site of the Abner Jackson Plantation. Construction began in 1941 and by January of 1942 the first family to live in the town moved into their brand new home on Trumpet Vine Street. Today, Lake Jackson supports a community of tens of thousands of Texans and is a member of Brazosport, a multi-city Chamber of Commerce comprised of communities located along the Brazos and San Bernard Rivers. Brazosport is also home to the largest basic chemical complex in the world where chemical manufacturing, petro-chemical processing, and deep-water port activity take place. A visit to the Lake Jackson Historical Museum will provide visitors with an opportunity to discover everything about the founding of this company town. Lake Jackson is also home to Sea Center Texas, a marine aquarium, fish hatchery and education center operated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Visitors to Sea Center learn about the native marine life inhabiting the estuaries and gulf waters of coastal Texas.
