Today, a 25-foot granite statue of the explorer Sieur de la Salle, Robert Cavelier rises from Magnolia Beach in Indianola, once a prime entry point for immigrants to Texas and a Southern coastal defense site during the Civil War that underwent federal bombardment and fell briefly under Union control. When hurricanes in 1875 and 1886 destroyed much of Indianola, nearby Port Lavaca became a prominent port. Next to the county courthouse, the Calhoun County Museum displays a diorama of Old Indianola’s port, plus items from La Salle’s shipwreck and the massive lens from the Matagorda Island Lighthouse.
