Floyd County is farming country--growing cotton, wheat, and as many as a million pumpkins a year. It’s no wonder that the county seat, Floydada, claims the title “Pumpkin Capital USA.” To honor that heritage, the lawn of the 1950 Floyd County Courthouse fills with arts and crafts vendors during the annual Punkin' Days festival. A more distant heritage draws visitors to the Floyd County Historical Museum, housed in a century-old hardware store. In the 1950s in nearby Blanco Canyon, an amateur local archeologist made startling discoveries of artifacts dating to the expedition of Spanish conquistador Coronado more than 400 years earlier. The museum displays some of the finds--including a chain mail gauntlet, copper cross bow points, horseshoe nails, snaffle bit and two 16th-century Spanish coins. The museum represents early ranch life in Blanco Canyon with a furnished reproduction of the T-M Bar Ranch House. Other exhibits feature heirlooms from the county’s pioneer families, alongside quirky artifacts such as a “madstone” used to treat victims bit by a rabid animal. The adjacent Mary Lou Bollman History and Genealogy Center attracts researchers from across the country.
