DAY TRIPPIN’ IN DRIPPIN’
The community of Dripping Springs received an early start courtesy of Dr. Joseph McKegg Pound and family, settlers who arrived in the 1850s and made this pleasant region their home. Despite the presence of local Native Americans who were frequently hostile to Anglo interlopers like the Pounds, the good Doctor and entourage survived the first few critical years unharmed, possibly due to the fact that Pound was willing to treat the ailments of Native Americans with an attention equal to his treatment of fellow Anglo patients. Today, Dripping Springs and the surrounding region continue to offer a perfect place to enjoy the Hill Country’s natural beauty. Nearby Pedernales Falls State Park, the spring-fed Hamilton Pool Preserve (swimmers should be prepared for sixty degree water), and the family-friendly Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center all provide a chance for visitors to enjoy the best of the Hill Country’s outdoor environment. The region is perfect for wine production, and over 20 wineries, along with local breweries, distilleries, as well as and specialty chefs and restaurants are the stars of the Dripping with Taste Trail. Finish your visit where it all began at the Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead and Museum in Dripping Springs’ Founders Memorial Park. The Pounds’ farmstead, former home to four generations of the Pound family, features the original home comprised of two log cabins joined by a central “dog trot” breezeway, the renovated barn, a smokehouse, the windmill, and gardens.
