BIG SPRING LIVING HISTORY

Heritage communities like Big Spring usually go to great lengths to preserve and restore much of their historic past, a project that typically involves architecture like courthouses and stately homes. But Big Spring has taken an additional step and created a facsimile of its natural namesake – the big spring – once said to expel over one hundred thousand gallons of water per minute. Dry since the 1920’s, the spring habitat has been recreated in Comanche Trail Park using the park’s lake waters, providing visitors with an idea of how the historic spring might once have appeared. Elsewhere, nearby Big Spring State Park harbors the historic results of Civil Conservation Corp efforts, including the park pavilion, headquarters, residence, pumphouse, restroom, and three-mile mountain loop, all constructed from locally quarried limestone. In town, Big Spring offers heritage travelers details of its historic past at the Heritage Museum, the preserved Potton House – a 1901 home now serving as museum, and the Hangar 25 Air Museum where Big Spring’s military history unfolds inside an enormous restored red brick hangar.
