70 years of tradition
Luling Watermelon Thump
Get ready for a juicy celebration at the upcoming Luling Watermelon Thump in Luling, Texas! This beloved festival has been a summer tradition since 1954, bringing together locals and visitors to honor the town's watermelon heritage.
How it started
In 1954, Hermon Allen, the principal of Luling Elementary School, proposed the idea of a celebration to promote the local watermelon market and honor the growers. The name "Thump" comes from the practice of thumping a watermelon to check if it's ripe - a hollow sound means it's ready to eat.
Over the years, this small-town event has grown into a major four-day festival that draws roughly 30,000 visitors to Luling, which only has a population of 5,500 people. The annual Thump has become an important part of Luling's identity and agricultural heritage.
