Originally a livestock exposition and agricultural showcase, the Fair has grown into one of the largest state fairs in the country, drawing millions of visitors each year. As you walk through the sprawling grounds of Fair Park, designated a National Historic Landmark for its Art Deco architecture, it’s easy to feel that button-busting Texas pride welling up inside you. Rooted in Agriculture
One of the real stars of the Fair is its deep roots in Texas agriculture. Livestock competitions are still the heart and soul of the event, with ranchers hauling in their finest cattle, horses, pigs, and more. And don’t miss the students proudly showing off their prize-winning animals! It’s a reminder that behind all the fun and fried food, Texas is built on good old fashioned hard work and dedication.

Fried foods reign supreme, from the iconic corn dog to the far more "imaginative" concoctions like deep-fried butter and, yes, even fried Coca-Cola!
Big Tex, the Fair's most iconic symbol, stands 55 feet tall. This towering cowboy has welcomed visitors since 1952, his booming voice echoing across the fairgrounds with a hearty “Howdy, folks!” His annual unveiling each September has become a beloved tradition, signaling the official start of the Fair.
But the State Fair of Texas isn’t just fried foods and prize-winning pigs—it’s a full-on deep dive into the heart of Texas culture. With competitions showcasing everything from quilted masterpieces to homemade pies and jams, there’s no shortage of talent on display. And all are after that coveted blue ribbon.

And let’s not forget the butter sculpture—a Fair staple where buttery brilliance takes center stage! Visitors can even cheer on their favorite team in tradition-filled college football rivalry games like Texas vs. OU or Prairie View A&M vs. Grambling State.

Located in the GO TEXAN/Food and Fiber pavilion, the Texas Heritage Trails Program hosts the only travel information booth at the Fair. Feel free to stop by, ask questions, and pick up brochures to help plan your next trip to explore Texas' rich history, heritage, and culture. The booth is open 7 days a week during the Fair (Sunday-Thursday 10:00am – 8:00pm and Friday-Saturday 10:00am- 9:00pm).
