The Davis Mountains were important to the Mescalero Apache, Spanish explorers, and early pioneers, but the overlapping interests in the area and harsh desert made it a dangerous place on the Texas frontier. The road from Fort Stockton provided a route for travel and transport of supplies to Fort Davis and helped the Buffalo Soldiers set up the fort as their main post in the West Texas mountains. Soldiers from the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry also patrolled this road to protect mail delivery and supply wagons, build new roads, and set up telegraph lines. The Buffalo Soldiers’ work in this area made the Davis Mountains appealing for settlers looking to move to this part of Texas.
