The trail from Austin to Fort McKavett was a busy place for the Buffalo Soldiers. Both the foot soldiers and the cavalry worked hard to keep this part of the Texas frontier safe and to help it grow. One of their main jobs was called “Escort Duty.” Under this role, soldiers protected mail coaches, supply wagons, and railroad workers as they traveled through dangerous areas. The Buffalo Soldiers also rebuilt old army posts like Fort McKavett, built roads, and set up telegraph lines to allow for faster communication. They went on scouting trips to learn about the land and created maps that were used by the army and settlers to plan continued travel west.
