An early challenge for the 9th Cavalry came on December 26, 1867, at Fort Lancaster — the halfway point between Fort McKavett and Fort Stockton — which protected an important crossing of the Pecos River. It was their very first chance to fight "toe to toe," or face their enemies directly in battle. This was a huge moment for the soldiers, especially for Company K. Company K had a small group of about 70 soldiers at the fort, and they were up against a much larger force of around 1,000 Native Americans, Mexican bandits, and various outlaws, who were working together. Despite being greatly outnumbered, the Buffalo Soldiers fought with bravery and determination, cementing their reputation as strong and courageous soldiers.
