There was plenty of fresh water and wild animals in this area, which made it a popular place for hunters, settlers, and travelers. However, this refuge could be dangerous because of attacks from nearby Native American tribes, such as the Comanche and Kiowa. To keep people safe from these attacks, the U.S. Army built Fort Griffin, and one of the groups of soldiers sent there were Buffalo Soldiers. They protected residents, built roads and forts, and kept peace in the area. Fort Griffin played an important role in protecting people during a time when living on the frontier was risky and full of challenges.
